Quantifying molecular transport in membrane proteins using novel optofluidic assay


Cells exchange nutrients and other essential substrates for metabolism and survival by different kinds of transport proteins. For example a channel present in the outer membrane of mitochondria known as voltage dependent anion channel (VDAC), virtually present in all eukaryotic organisms, exchange metabolites between cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC mediates an intimate dichotomy between metabolism and death in all cells although functional mechanism is not clear Moreover, another important parameter that plays a key role in cell homeostasis is the transmembrane potential that regulates ion flow across ion channels or vice versa is investigated widely. In this project the idea will be to develop in-vitro liposome based systems to study in a quantitative manner the transport of molecules




M.Sc. Biochemistry/​Biophysics/​Microbiology with minimum 55% marks.
