Brief description of the project: Social spiders are an emerging model system to study collective behavior. In this project we will be examining how a collectively built web influences the architectural and mechanical properties of the web. We will conduct behavioral experiments in the lab and field to examine individual and collective web-building behavior of spiders. Using image analysis and finite element modelling, we will examine the architecture and topology of the asymmetric sheet webs built by the social spider Stegodyphus sarasinorum.
Azim Premji University, Bangalore strives to contribute towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. Azim Premji University invites applications from students with a MSc degree in Biology (preferably with a life science, zoology, or ecology background) to apply for a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) post. The SERB funded interdisciplinary project “integrating collective behavior with biomechanics of social spider webs’ will be in collaboration with civil engineers from IISc and Behavioral Ecologist from IISER, TVM.
