Project

Integrating collective behaviour with biomechanics of social spider webs

Profile

Brief description of the project: Social spiders are an emerging model system to study collective behavior. In this project we will be examining how a collectively built web influences the architectural and mechanical properties of the web. We will conduct behavioral experiments in the lab and field to examine individual and collective web-building behavior of spiders. Using image analysis and finite element modelling, we will examine the architecture and topology of the asymmetric sheet webs built by the social spider Stegodyphus sarasinorum.
