Profile
The ICGEB invites applications for the position of Director of its Component in New Delhi. ICGEB is an intergovernmental Organisation established in 1987 within the United Nations system, to provide the scientific community with a centre of excellence for research and training in genetic engineering and biotechnology to the benefit of developing countries. The Centre, currently supported by 66 Member States, operates through three Components in Trieste, Italy, New Delhi, India and Cape Town, South Africa. The New Delhi Component was established in 1988 to provide a hub for advanced research and training and to address critical problems of the developing world in the fields of health and agriculture through the application of genetic engineering and biotechnology.
Duration
The post is full-time and will be offered as a 5‑year contract, renewable subject to performance.
Money
Attractive salary package and allowances commensurate with the post, qualification and past experiences.
Qualification
- Being an active scientist of high international standing, of unblemished reputation, and commanding respect in the scientific and technological fields of the Centre;
Experience
- Having extensive experience in the management of a scientific centre of international calibre and proven track record of leading a multidisciplinary team of scientists, including the successful translation of scientific research towards innovation and/or commercialization;
- Having a strong track record of leading a very successful international research team of scientists in and outside of the Indian subcontinent and able to attract international scientists for regular positions at the New Delhi Component;
- Being skilled in conducting effective interactions with governments of ICGEB Member States, other international institutions and the scientific community worldwide;
- Understanding the requirements of the Indian, as well as the Regional, bio-economy strategic thrust, and the relevant administrative elements thereof;
- Having close familiarity with Asia’s biotechnology context: challenges, requirements and regional objectives, with a proven capacity to network across the international stakeholder community, including the scientific and political domains;
- Having substantial (minimum 20 years) previous experience in the leadership and management of major international and regional programmes is an asset.

The candidates short-listed by the Council of Scientific Advisors (CSA) of ICGEB will visit the Component located in New Delhi, interact with the Group Leaders to ascertain their current research programmes and deliver a seminar (which should be approximately 40 minutes of the candidate’s research and 15 minutes of the candidate’s vision for the Component). The final selection will be based on overall evaluation and the interviews by a panel from the CSA.
