National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) invites applications from suitable individuals for the position of Senior Project Associate on a contract basis. This project aims to assess how plant functional traits explain species’ variation in seedling response to light and water availability, and link findings to habitat fragmentation and global change. The researcher will manage field teams, conduct vegetation census, collect environmental data, help with functional traits assessment, collate and analyse data, and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Candidates are invited to appear before the selection committee for the interview for filling up the purely temporary position in the Short-Term Research Fellowship programme, under the supervision of Shailesh Kumar, Scientist, NIPGR. NIPGR reserves the right to select the candidate against the above post depending upon the qualifications and experience of the candidate. Reservation of posts shall be as per Govt. of India norms. The position may be terminated any time by giving a month notice by either side. The applicants will have no claim implicit or explicit for consideration against any regular position of NIPGR. If the candidate does not have master’s degree in bioinformatics, then M.Sc. and, at least six months or more research experience in the field of bioinformatics and data sciences will be required to shortlist the candidate for interview. Since its inception in 2014, FNDR has generated a portfolio of therapeutics in tuberculosis, nontuberculous mycobacteria, malaria, dengue, leishmania, serious bacterial infections, fungal infections, COVID-19 and RSV, spanning over early-stage discovery to late-stage clinical trials. The project aims to identify spatial patterns of environmental and biological factors such as leaf, soil and pollinator larval chemistry, and biological interactions such as plant-insect and plant-soil microbial interactions, as putative indicators of the impact of roads on agropastoral land use practices. The Research Assistant will be involved in implementing the project, including but not limited to developing protocols for data collection, planning, and collecting data through fieldwork and laboratory work, and working with research partners and interns. They will also be involved with facilitating chemical and genomic analyses of samples, analysing the data, and writing. The fieldwork for sample and data collection will be primarily around Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The Research Assistant will work with Yadugiri Tiruvaimozhi and Shivani Jadeja, Assistant Professors of Biology, School of Interwoven Arts and Sciences, Krea University. The project aims to understand traits associated with drought tolerance in saplings of dry deciduous tree species to model their response to climate change and invasive species in a dry tropical ecosystem. The work will involve data collection in the field and greenhouse. Candidates will be expected to work with senior members to manage field assistants, organise and implement field work, plan and implement greenhouse experiments, collate and compile data, and conduct preliminary analysis.
