Welcome to the first monthly newsletter of the year 2025!

As we gear up for YIM 2025, we're excited to announce that the Postdoctoral Fellow Database and Abstract Book for the meeting are live, and childcare grantees have been shortlisted. The 17th Young Investigators' Meeting (YIM 2025) will be held in Agra, Uttar Pradesh from 3-7 March 2025, supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India in partnership with Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence. Only two months to go for YIM 2025!

Also lined up at the start of the year is the third Regional Young Investigators’ Meeting (RYIM) for 2024-2025, which will be held from 22 to 24 January 2025 in Chennai. Also, applications for the final RYIM for this grant round, the RYIM Delhi-NCR are now open and we hope you will consider meeting us there. Chalo Rajdhani!

Beyond meetings, it is also a busy time for skill-building at IndiaBioscience, with applications open for a virtual workshop on building a career development plan for postdoctoral fellows in India and a Dialogue on leadership roles for women in shaping academia. IndiaBioscience will also be conducting Crafting Your Career (CYC) workshops at India Science Festival 2025 in Fergusson College, Pune.

17th Young Investigators’ Meeting (YIM 2025), Agra: Childcare grant awardees announced!

While on YIM 2025, the childcare grantees have now been shortlisted. At IndiaBioscience we recognise the dual challenges of balancing professional advancement and caregiver responsibilities, and this year we have offered childcare grants to a diverse group of 11 YIs, PDFs, mentors, and co-organisers.

RYIM Delhi-NCR 2024-2025

We are excited to announce the Regional Young Investigators’ Meeting (RYIM) Delhi-NCR on 19-21 March 2025 at National Brain Research Centre (NBRC), Manesar, Gurgaon, and Ashoka University, Sonipat (AU). With the theme Building Networks and Collaborations in Interdisciplinary Science, this 3-day meeting will bring together a series of scientific talks, presentations and professional development discussions.

IndiaBioscience will lead a Crafting Your Career (CYC) workshop on 20 March 2025. For more information and to register, click here. The last date to apply is 15 February 2025. We hope to see you there, Chalo Rajdhani!

RYIM Chennai 2024

We are excited to announce the third Regional Young Investigators’ Meeting in Chennai. The event will be held from 22 to 24 January 2025 at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in Chennai.

With the theme ‘Future of medicine and allied health sciences’, this 3-day meeting will bring together a series of scientific talks, presentations & professional development discussions. IndiaBioscience will lead a Crafting Your Career (CYC) workshop on 24 January 2025.

COMMUNITY BUILDING
Dialogue on leadership roles for women in shaping academia

We are excited to announce the meeting “Dialogue on leadership roles for women in shaping academia”, organised by IndiaBioscience in collaboration with POWER Bio and IIT Bombay. This two-day event will address barriers and strategies to enhance gender equity in Indian academia through discussions on recruitment, establishing research groups, navigating promotions, and leadership visibility.

She Inspires!

Our She Inspires! awardees are bringing us great joy! This month we feature two awardees. Kala Samadharmam from ICAR-IISWC-Research Centre, Kota -Rajasthan gave a talk to local school students on the ‘Importance of forestry and environmental conservation with a focus on career opportunities in forest and wildlife science’.

Olivia Majhi from Banaras Hindu University conducted a session for school students ‘on Life as a scientist and career counselling in the life sciences’ in a blend of Hindi and English.

She Inspires! is a collaborative initiative by IndiaBioscience and Rukhmabai Initiatives that aims to support women science professionals with a small seed fund to engage with local school children.

Digital Initiatives
IndiaBioscience X EMBO: Webinar on ‘From Bench to Journal: Connecting Open Science and Publishing’

The five journals of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Press are renowned for publishing highly curated and impactful research. In collaboration with EMBO, IndiaBioscience's iGAP presents an insightful webinar that delves into the selection criteria and policies designed to foster a more constructive and informed publishing process - minimising friction for researchers while enhancing the quality of scientific output.

It will highlight the synergy between peer-reviewed scientific journals, Open Science, and data repositories, focusing on initiatives like ​‘refereed preprints,’ Review Commons’ journal-agnostic review service, and the publication of curated, quality-controlled source data. These efforts aim to accelerate scientific sharing and foster a more constructive research assessment. The discussion will also delve into the integration of data-focused peer review, AI-human quality control, and Open Science platforms, which promote transparency and timely dissemination of research. Additionally, the webinar will examine the impact of AI on the research process, spanning from bench to journal.

We are excited to announce the second edition of the science writing competition by IndiaBioscience, ‘Write On—2024'. We're calling for diverse styles of popular science writing: storytelling, fiction, book reviews, or interview articles.

IndiaBioscience will be at India Science Festival 2025

We are very happy to announce that IndiaBioscience will be at India Science Festival 2025 in Fergusson College, Pune. On 11 and 12 January, we will be conducting a Crafting Your Career (CYC) workshop for Masters students and PhD researchers across STEM fields. You can register for the in-person workshop here.

Built around the theme ​‘The Underreported: Bridging Gaps in Science Journalism’, the meeting showcased a range of innovative engagements formats that fostered discussion and deliberation between journalists, communicators, and scientists.

Understanding BRCA1 mutations in breast cancer

β‑hCG, commonly known as the ​“pregnancy hormone,” may hold promise as a positive prognostic marker in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Researchers at the Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnology Centre, Kerala, have been investigating the molecular mechanisms of tumorigenesis by BRCA1 gene, the mutations of which are strongly associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancers.

Can our brains age before us? Decoding brain ageing with neuroimaging

Researchers, led by Vivek Tiwari from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur, recently established ​‘Brain age,’ a measure of neuroanatomic health. As we grow older, our brain’s age alters, and the researchers have shown that quantifying these alterations would help us understand ageing and its associated cognitive disorders.

Your Career Blueprint: Crafting your Individual Development Plan

In partnership with Sarada Bulchand from Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore, IndiaBioscience brings to you a specially-curated workshop for postdocs in India.

Designing your Career Blueprint: Crafting your Individual Development Plan is an interactive workshop designed to help postdoctoral fellows in life sciences to take proactive control of their career development by crafting a personalised Individual Development Plan (IDP). You can find more details here.

For shortlisted applicants, the workshop will include an online session on 7 February 2025 (10-1 pm IST) and a small group coaching on 21 and 27 February 2025. The last date to apply is 15 January 2025. We look forward to supporting the career trajectories of our postdoc community in India.

Open funding call - EMBO Courses & Workshops

We are happy to announce that the call for EMBO Courses & Workshops is now open!

The deadline to apply for funds to organise conferences, practical, and theoretical courses taking place in India in 2026 is 1 March 2025, 12:00 noon CET. All EMBO-funded courses and conferences are open to the research community in India.

In addition, all event organisers have a dedicated budget to fund: Travel grants and registration fee waivers for researchers based in India, Childcare grants, Accessibility grants, and Hybrid meeting registration fee waivers.

Closed workshop by HSI/ India & BIRAC, DBT, Govt. of India

IndiaBioscience was invited to co-chair a session at the closed workshop on innovative funding mechanisms/ strategic partnerships for advancing non-animal methodologies by HSI/ India & BIRAC, DBT, Govt. of India. Karishma S Kaushik, Executive Director, IndiaBioscience co-conducted the session on ‘Designing strategies for NAMs in India’ with speakers representing approaches that could be adopted at medical colleges, biomedical institutions, IITs, and via collaborative partnerships.
