Field Site Coordinator

Profile

To oversee and manage data collection on tree-demography and growth, ecosystem carbon cycling, plant and soil sampling and analysis, and to ensure the day-to-day functioning of field stations. The candidate will liaise with the PI and other investigators, and is expected to assist in data analysis and report and manuscript writing.

National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) invite applications from suitable candidates for the position of Field site coordinators as part of our Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Network. NCBS is looking for coordinators to oversee the day-to-day running and data collection at two our long-term monitoring sites in Sirsi, Karnataka, and in the Eastern Ghats (Nagarjuna Sagar & Amarabad Tiger Reserves). The positions demand that the candidates be highly self-motivated, capable of working independently and being based in remote locations. 

The work will involve:
1. Bi-weekly collection of data on soil and tree respiration, and plant phenology.
2. Monthly monitoring of litter and seed traps to quantify litter fall and seed rain.
3. Quarterly data collection on tree growth based on dendrometers
4. Annual census of trees in plots.

In addition, the work will also involve the collection and processing of litter, leaf and soil samples and subsequent data entry and management. The candidate is also expected to oversee the running of the field station, assist with data analysis and writing of reports, and to liaise with the forest department and other stakeholders.

Location: The positions will be based at Sirsi, Karnataka and Sundipenta, Andhra Pradesh, but will involve frequent travel to local field sites, and to Bangalore.

Age limit: 50 years as of 01.01.2024 (subject to relaxation as per GoI norms)

Duration

The appointment will be a fixed-term position initially for one (1) year and renewable annually subject to the outcome of a performance assessment. The position comes with consolidated pay based on qualification and experience, subject to institutional guidelines.

Money

Salary will commensurate with experience and qualification.

Qualification

M.Sc degree, preferably in the ecological sciences

Experience

  • The ability to work independently and manage field staff
  • Field experience and knowledge of field botany
  • Have a drivers license
  • A demonstrable understanding of issues relating to environmental data collection and analysis. Prior experience in measuring and quantifying carbon stocks and fluxes is a plus.
