Forests are one of the vital natural resources that harbor rich floral and faunal diversity. However, growing demand for forest based products has led to heavy deforestation and habitat loss. Forests are valued with focus on different utilization potentials viz., as a source of timber produce, an ecosystem composed of trees along with innumerable forms of biological diversity, a home for indigenous people, a repository for carbon storage, a source of multiple ecosystem services and climate moderation. However, diversion of forest land for non-forestry purposes has further led to extensive deforestation. Therefore we can simply presume that we are exploiting our natural resources in particular forests at a pace faster than they can be renewed.
Critical ecological and environmental deterioration has resulted one or all of above impacts resulting in climate change locally as well as globally. These scenarios have led to the need for acceleration of forest ecological research and their application to evolve effective ecological strategies for sustainable management of forest resources. In the light of above, it is also important to deliberate and share the recent advances made in the disciplines of applied forest ecology. The conference would provide a common platform to forest ecologists, academicians, foresters and practicing field experts to share their experiences and discuss recent developments.
