Welcome to the November edition of our monthly newsletter!

We're excited to announce that 40 YI and 40 PDF participants have been shortlisted for the 17th Young Investigators' Meeting (YIM 2025). YIM 2025 will be held in Agra, Uttar Pradesh from 3-7 March 2025, supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India in partnership with Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence.

While on in-person meetings, we successfully wrapped up two courses on Laboratory Leadership for Group Leaders, in partnership with EMBO. These four-day in-person courses were delivered at two locations – IISER Pune from 15-18 October and NCBS Bengaluru from 21-24 October 2024. Close to 40 group leaders within seven years of joining a research institute or university in India participated in these courses. Looking forward to another in-person meeting, the second Regional Young Investigators’ Meeting (RYIM) for 2024-2025 will be held from 28 to 30 November 2024 in Bengaluru.

Our podcast platform, IndiaBiospeaks, released a new episode of the ‘Jugalbandi - A science duet’ series, and we are excited to announce the release of a new podcast series: Sci-Fi or Sci-Fact? Also, IndiaBioreads is back with three new e-compendia: ‘On the Road to Excellence - Funding Opportunities for Life Science Researchers in India,’ ‘Journey of Young Investigator (JOYI) 2024’ and ‘Academia-Industry Transitions, Volume II’.

And we are also excited to announce the second edition of the science writing competition by IndiaBioscience: ‘Write On—2024' is coming soon!

YIM 2025 will be held in Agra, Uttar Pradesh from 3-7 March 2025 in partnership with Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence (SNIoE) and supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

RYIM Bengaluru 2024

We are excited to announce the second Regional Young Investigators’ Meeting in Bengaluru. The event will be held from 28 to 30 November 2024 at Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine, MAHE and St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences.

With the theme ‘Accelerating Indian science through private investments’, this 3-day meeting will bring together a series of scientific talks, presentations & professional development discussions. IndiaBioscience will lead a Crafting Your Career (CYC) workshop on 28 November 2024.

A mathematical model to treat psoriasis

Researchers at Jadavpur University, have developed a mathematical model that can now predict the way psoriasis progresses during treatment, provide optimal treatment solutions and also calculate any future triggers.

How cells allocate resources when they face shortages

Researchers led by Sunil Laxman, from the Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine, Bengaluru, have experimentally shown that cells follow principles of economics when they encounter nutrient limitation. Their results provide an economic framework for prioritisation strategies used by cells on facing nutrient limitation.

Hosted by GITAM Deemed to be University (GITAM) and Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone Pvt. Ltd. (AMTZ), the event featured insightful workshops, networking sessions, and discussions on bridging the gap between research and medical technology development.

SKILL BUILDING
Laboratory Leadership for Group Leaders

We successfully wrapped up two courses on Laboratory Leadership for Group Leaders, in partnership with EMBO. These four-day in-person courses were delivered at two locations – IISER Pune from 15-18 October 2024 and NCBS Bengaluru from 21-24 October 2024. Close to 40 group leaders within seven years of joining a research institute or university in India participated in these courses.

The program empowered participants to build essential leadership skills for driving impactful research and fostering collaborative lab environments. We are thankful to all the participants for making these sessions a resounding success.

Crafting your Career (CYC) workshop at CMC Vellore

Ankita Rathore, Program Manager - Science Communication, and Arushi Batra, Program Manager - Digital Initiatives, will conduct a Crafting Your Career (CYC) workshop for Masters’ students, PhD and postdoctoral researchers on 25 November 2024 at CMC Vellore. We are looking forward to conducting a CYC at a medical college!

The CYC program was started at IndiaBioscience in 2019, with a goal to raise awareness among life science students and postdoctoral researchers about the different science careers in India and to help them develop skills to navigate career paths. Starting 2024, IndiaBioscience is open to requests for CYC workshops in online and in-person modes, with a suite of modules and formats that can be found in our recently revamped Crafting Your Career (CYC) webpage. Our newly-launched online format is customised for virtual engagement across a 3-hour module, making it an excellent option for senior PhD researchers and postdocs in an institute.

Data and Policy

Humane Society International/India, in collaboration with IndiaBioscience and Centre for Predictive Human Model Systems, AIC-CCMB is conducting a survey to understand peer reviewer expectations and requests during the submission of in vitro data and authors’ perceptions of these requests.

This survey includes questions such as whether a reviewer has ever asked that you validate your in vitro findings with an animal experiment and whether you thought that request was scientifically justified. We want to hear from you either way. Follow this link to the 5-minute survey.
