L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad is organising the International conference “The Future is Here: Gene Therapy, Cell Therapy, and Biomaterials in Ophthalmology” on 18 – 20, January 2024.
Ocular disorders leading to blindness represent a significant global health concern with a substantial impact on the quality of life, global productivity and poses enormous global financial burden. The recent advancement in Biotechnology offers novel approaches to address blindness. Stem cell-based therapy such as epithelial progenitors, multipotent Mesenchymal stem cells and iPSC with their remarkable capacity of self-renewal and differentiation, have provided a ray of hope to patients with corneal and retinal disorders. Gene therapy such as CRISPR/Cas9 technology is emerging as a promising tool to repair genetic defect underlying corneal dystrophy and retinal disorders. Novel biomaterials, such as alginate, collagen, decellularized Extra-cellular Matrix (dECM), silk, and biocompatible synthetic polymer-based hydrogels are providing a better ocular drug delivery platform and engineering corneal substitutes. The event aims to bridges the gap between scientific discovery and translation of these innovations into tangible solutions for ocular disorders. This event will provide an arena for interdisciplinary collaboration, uniting biotechnologists, geneticists, ophthalmologists, and biomaterial experts in a shared mission to advance the therapeutic landscape in ophthalmology. The knowledge and experienced shared by renowned national and international experts in the field would empower researchers and practitioners to explore novel treatments and therapies that have the potential to prevent blindness.
