The Department of Biological Sciences at Ashoka University invites application for its Ph.D. program (Spring 2019) in interdisciplinary Biological research that covers a wide number of topics, ranging from single molecules to organismal biology, including Evolutionary Biology, Animal Behaviour, Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Biophysics, aided by state of the art research facilities.

A fixed number of attractive Ph.D. fellowships will be offered by Ashoka University to support the Ph.D. students (as per the rules and regulations). The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of INR 35,000, an annual contingency grant of INR 20,000 and offers extensive teaching opportunities.

The monthly stipend and annual contingency grant given to Ph.D. students who receive other scholarships (from UGC, CSIR or a partner organization) will be decided based on terms covering the scholarship itself and as per the norms of the University.

Students will also be offered housing on campus (on availability). In case on-campus housing is not available, Rs. 7000 pm rent allowance will be paid towards off-campus housing

Qualification

The Ph.D. program at Ashoka University accepts candidates with a Masters in any basic science discipline, including biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and mathematics or BTech/​MBBS MTech/​MPharm degree in applied sciences such as medicine, engineering. We are particularly looking for candidates who enjoy research, who are highly motivated and can create and take forward their ideas in research. We would value candidates who enjoy collaboration and forging work with a sense of team spirit.

To Apply

To apply for the Biology Ph.D. program, applicants will need to complete an online application form. Online applications should also include a brief statement of research interests (maximum 1 page) and two letters of recommendation. The statement of research interests and recommendation letters should be directly emailed to phd.​biology@​ashoka.​edu.​in. Interested candidates should first visit the webpage of the programme and acquaint themselves with the kind of research being pursued at Ashoka before writing the statement of research.

Ph.D. admission will be based on a written test at the Ashoka University campus in Sonepat, followed by a personal interview. However, candidates who have qualified the CSIR/UGC/ICMR/GATE exam will be exempted from the written test, and can directly appear for the interview.

Please note that the written test will assess basic analytical skills and may include +2 level mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. There is no specified syllabus. We do not provide sample question papers.
