Applications are invited for the Prof. Saroj Chandrasekhar Memorial Award, 2025, to recognise and reward women scientists in the areas of Biosciences and Biotechnology. This annual award will be presented to women candidates who are in the third or fourth year of their doctoral programme.
This award is instituted by the Chandrasekhar Foundation in memory of Prof. Saroj Chandrasekhar, who made significant contributions in tuberculosis research. Prof. Saroj Chandrasekhar completed her B.Sc. from St. Xavier's College, University of Bombay, in 1947, and Ph.D. from Imperial College of Science and Technology, UK in Bacteriology (Microbiology) in 1950. She returned to India to do a post-doctoral fellowship at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa Campus, New Delhi. Prof. Saroj joined the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute at the University of Delhi in 1953, eventually becoming a full professor, head of the Department of Microbiology and Assistant Director of the Institute in 1970. From 1966 to 1969, she was a visiting faculty member at Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Hygiene and Public Health (now Bloomberg School of Public Health) in Baltimore, MD, USA, carrying out research in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis. Her major contributions to tuberculosis research were in definitively demonstrating the existence of cell-wall-deficient forms of tubercle bacilli that are totally unaffected by antibiotics and can remain dormant in humans for decades, like sleeper cells; when their host is severely immune-suppressed, they "come alive" causing tuberculosis. Her contributions have impacted how we treat this disease today. Prof. Chandrasekhar passed away in 2017.
Two Awards will be given, each carrying a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a certificate; travel expenses for the award ceremony will also be reimbursed.

]]>EMBO Workshops bring together scientists to present and discuss the latest findings in their subject areas related to the life sciences. Scientists can apply to organize a conference in their field. This bottom-up approach ensures that the portfolio of scientific meetings funded by EMBO reflects the needs and developments of the scientific community.
In addition to providing the basic funding for the meeting, EMBO assists organizers in promoting the workshop and creating a webpage with a registration and abstract submission system.
Scientists can apply for funding to organize an EMBO Workshop. EMBO can contribute up to a maximum of 42,500 euros (35,000 euros of core funding plus 5,500 euros exclusively for travel grants and registration fee waivers, 1,000 euros for childcare grants and 1,000 euros for accessibility grants) per workshop.

Thematic areas: The proposals will be considered in all domains of Biotechnology including Healthcare, Agriculture, Plant, Animal Biotechnology, and Biomanufacturing. Applications will be assessed for relevance, risk, transformational impact and advances of scientific value.
Funding Mechanism: Financial support for projects selected under this program will be under the DBT Bio-RIDE scheme. Projects having academic partners only will be funded by DBT. Projects involving academia & start-ups will be supported by Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a PSU of DBT.

]]>The Archives at NCBS invites applications to enable digital access to collections that are rare, endangered and of archival value, and related to the history of science and technology in contemporary India (approximately between 1850 to 1995). The program is dedicated to documenting under-represented and marginalised histories in science-technology-engineering-mathematics/medicine (STEM) in India. Each project should typically outline names for three roles: an individual lead applicant who is an Indian citizen, a legally registered partner organisation in India that would also be the signing authority to receive the project funds, and an archival source for the material.
The grant will be awarded to enable digital access for archival material related to contemporary India’s history of science and technology. The award funds can be deployed toward any or all of material survey, digitization, archival appraisal, cataloguing, description and arrangement, digital media transfer, physical conservation of select material to enable digital access, image processing, data storage, and more. The grant can be used toward both digitising and/or furthering already digitised material toward public access. Projects would survey and evaluate the archival material either before applying for a grant or in the first month after receiving the award. They will need to manage and catalogue the material per archival standards, create metadata (content descriptions for archival objects in the collection), and handle imaging and creation of the digital assets in the collection.The end goal is enabling free, public digital access for the project through the website of the Archives at NCBS. This material must be catalogued in our online digital archive in a standard archiving format (refer, for instance, to our featured collections, https://archives.ncbs.res.in/featured-collections). The material will be discoverable and viewable through the website of the Archives at NCBS.
Archival material could be rare printed material, unique and original material such as manuscripts, maps, ephemeral objects, and audio-visual material such as recordings, photographs, micro-film, film, and more. Collections could include digitised and born-digital data. It may include data stored in obsolete technology - such as video tapes, audio tapes, CDs, micro-film, and more.

The Branco Weiss Fellowship – Society in Science is a community of exceptional young scientists who share a passion for taking research beyond the mainstream. Fellows are given the means to pursue their personal vision of a particular scientific project independently – in the best possible locations, anywhere in the world. The fellowship is awarded to postdocs for up to five years. The fellowship is international and covers all scientific fields. Besides a passion for the research itself, Branco Weiss Fellows share the desire of communicating beyond their own field of study and with society at large.
Research projects should be conceived to last five years.
The first two and a half years of a project are called the pioneer phase. Before the end of the second year, a site visit will take place and a review will be conducted. At this point, the project, its continued originality, and the productivity of the fellow will be evaluated. If the results of the evaluation and site visit are satisfactory, the fellow enters the exploitation phase for the remaining two and a half years of the fellowship.
Branco Weiss Fellows are encouraged to seek faculty positions during their exploitation phase. Fellows can start a faculty position/professorship after the first year of the fellowship. Assuming an academic position will not result in termination of the fellowship.
A Branco Weiss Fellowship amounts to max. CHF 600,000 for up to five years. It may be used to cover all legitimate costs of research (i.e. salary and/or equipment, travel expenses, consumables, personnel, etc.).

]]>The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) and WINStep Forward are partnering to support the prestigious Khorana Program for Scholars named in honor of Dr. Har Gobind Khorana, who won the Nobel Prize in 1968 for his work at the interface of Chemistry and Biology while a member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty. The Khorana Program will provide opportunities to Indian students to get research exposure at leading U.S. universities over summer 2025 for a period of 10-12 weeks.
Preference will be given to students without prior international research experience.

Research Grant teams awarded in 2024 are invited to apply for additional funds to add one new member to the team. They submit a proposal on behalf of the awarded team and written together with the proposed new accelerator member.
