EMBO and the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance (referred to as ‘India Alliance’) jointly fund up to six lecture courses per year in India. The aim of a lecture course is to teach participants, primarily PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. The course should provide participants with background and underlying concepts, thereby making the topic accessible to scientists with diverse scientific background.

An India | EMBO Lecture course should consist of:

• Scientific lectures by experts: preferably the speakers would give a more general overview lecture as well as a more specific research lecture
• Poster sessions and student presentations
• Additional sessions covering e.g.:
  • Technologies relevant to the research
  • Journal clubs
  • Reviewing of manuscripts
  • Career options
  • Where, when and how to apply for post doc positions and fellowships
• If deemed necessary practical training can be included

Organisers are encouraged to consider covering scientific writing, job applications, presentation skills or grant application writing. If additional trainers need to be hired, EMBO and India Alliance funds can be used. Please specify your request in the application.

Attendance of these events should not exceed 120 participants and the ratio of speakers to participants should be around 1:5. India | EMBO Lecture Courses have to take place in India and last between three and ten days to provide sufficient time for discussion groups, poster sessions and journal clubs.

The maximum core funding available for an India I EMBO Lecture Course is €33,500. In addition, the India Alliance provides a maximum of INR 5.5 Lakhs (~ €7000) for travel grants, childcare support and training workshops.

EMBO also supports the organisers and meeting by:

• creating a dedicated lecture course webpage, including registration and abstract submission forms.
• providing a poster and advertising in selected print and social media channels.
• offering funds for an EMBO Young Investigator lecture, EMBO Science Policy lecture and EMBO Women in Science lecture.

• Applications for lecture courses must cover a topic from the life sciences.
• Scientists from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply, independent of their nationality.

Applications to organise an India | EMBO Lecture Course are accepted via the EMBO online system. Application deadlines are 1 March and 1 August. Selections for funding are made by the EMBO Course Committee in April/May and in September/October.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, has launched a new grant opportunity, the M K Bhan – Young Researcher Fellowship Programme (MKB-YRFP), with an aim to encourage young bright researchers to continue their research in the country after Ph.D. The scheme is to offer an independent research grant to young Post-Doctoral Fellows, so as to enable them to emerge as future leaders and take up cutting edge research focused on issues of national relevance. This fellowship will be awarded for Research work to be carried out at DBT-Autonomous Institutes only.

Aim of the Fellowship

(i)To provide attractive opportunities to young researchers for developing them as independent investigators.

(ii)This will enable young researchers to pursue their research interests within the country and also develop a critical mass of trained scientists for the country’s research institutions, universities and major new initiative.

Duration

The duration of the fellowship will be for a period of three years and in exceptional cases the duration could be extended by another two years on a fresh appraisal.

Money

• The scheme provides a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs. 75,000/-p.m.
• MKB-YRFP fellows in addition will receive a research/contingency grant of Rs. 20.00lakh per year for hiring manpower, purchase of consumables, minor equipment, domestic travel and other contingent expenditure to be incurred for the implementation of research proposal selected for the fellowship.
• Can engage one manpower (JRF/SRF/Project Assistant/Project Associate) under him/her. Capital equipment will be procured in the name of the institute where the fellow proposes to work and value of the whole set of the equipment should not exceed Rs.10.00 lakh.
• MKB-YRFP fellows will be eligible for regular research grant through extra mural and other schemes of various S&T agencies of the Govt. of India, provided that Co-PI is a regular faculty. However, they can take research grant from anywhere but salary from only one source.

The applicant should be Indian National and possess a Ph.D. in any branch of Life Sciences/ Biotechnology/allied areas.

Significant scientific efforts have been made over the last decades to map, describe and harness the rich biodiversity (plants, animals, insects and microbes)of the North East Region (NER) of India, one of major biodiversity hot-spots of the world. Having achieved the current state of advanced scientific knowledge (plant, animal and microbial biology and chemistry)sets the stage for the next-level scientific questions to decipher inter-and intra-species interactions, communications and synergies.

Studies of this dynamic inter play mediated by the small-molecules and their macro molecular counterparts have given rise to a new scientific discipline of Chemical Ecology. This new “DBT Initiative on Chemical Ecology of the North East Region of India” aims to bring together researchers in complementary disciplines (biology, crop and soil sciences, entomology, horticulture, forestry, microbiology, pathology, biochemistry, molecular biology and natural-products chemistry) to explore the role chemical signals play in shaping the unique ecosystems of the NER by studying interactions at the molecular level and discovering novel molecules for improving human life and environment.

The occurrence of COVID-19 elevated intense attention not only within India but internationally however still we do not have fully approved (by US-FDA or CDSCO) medication for treating people infected with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. People infected with this new coronavirus have reported a wide range of symptoms – ranging from mild to severe illness - often appearing 2-14 days after exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. As the disease counts rise in India, it is of utmost importance to develop therapeutics that could be helpful in treating the patients infected with Corona virus. Effective strategies for prophylaxis and holistic management are of paramount importance in curtailing the progress of the disease and reducing burden on hospitals.

DBT/BIRAC have already announced two calls, under COVID 19 consortium, inviting proposals in the areas of Vaccines, Therapeutics, Diagnostics and Any other intervention. In continuation, the present call is being announced in the area of Therapeutics.

Objectives

The scope of this call is to address at least one of the following objectives:

• Development of therapeutics to address a rapid response towards the current COVID-19 outbreak: relevant “clinical ready”-assets including approved therapies or compounds in development, which could be repurposed for use in treating patients with the coronavirus.
• Development of therapeutics to address the current and/or future coronavirus outbreaks: identification of new potential assets and approaches that could be utilised including preventive strategies and combination approaches and could also address potential resistance. This may also include optimisation of promising treatments used in rapid response.

Duration

Up to 24 Months given the urgency of the global health situation unless SAG/Apex recommends more than 24 months considering the requirements of the project in rare exceptional scenario.

Money

The funding will be in the form Grant-in-Aid.

1. The Grant-in-Aid assistance support (hereafter referred to as Funding) will be subject to pre-acceptance of associated conditions and execution of Grant Agreement as prescribed by BIRAC. 2. The fund allocation into different budget heads and break-up into milestones will be done as per the recommendations of relevant committees

3. The Recurring cost includes small Equipment, Manpower, Consumables, Travel, Outsourcing towards CMO/Consultancy, Contingency. The Non-recurring component not to be more than 30% of the total project cost.

4. Outsourcing for activities to international labs may be considered only if the facility to perform the same is not available in India.

Depending on the nature of the applicant (academia or a Company/LLP), the funding will be made available by DBT or BIRAC. While academic organizations will be supported by DBT, companies/LLPs will receive support from BIRAC. If there is a collaboration between Industry/LLP & academia or academia & Industry/LLP, funding will be made available by BIRAC.

The application should include: (a) the application form in the prescribed format; (b) scanned copies of marks sheets from class X till the last examination; (c) a write-up (about 150–250 words) as to what the applicant wants to learn and achieve. Student applicants should provide the email id of one of their teachers or HoD familiar with their work. The Academy will approach them for a recommendation letter in the prescribed format. The selected candidate should work with the assigned guide for two months any time during the calendar year, preferably during the summer.

Six papers are shortlisted by the jury for the top pick. All shortlisted candidates receive a laptop and a citation. The winner will receive the ISA medal, a citation, and a cash award of INR 2,00,000.

• The research paper must have been published online for the first time between 1^st November 2019 and 30^th September 2020.
• The papers should have been accepted and published online or in a journal either as an accepted manuscript publication or a corrected proof publication.

Applications are solicited from Indian Nationals working in overseas research institutions for the “Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship”, a re-entry scheme of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.The fellowship is now being managed by Regional Center for Biotechnology under its HRD Project and Management Unit (HRD-PMU).

Aim of the Fellowship

The scheme has been conceptualized with the aim of attracting highly skilled researchers (Indian Nationals) working overseas in various cutting edge disciplines of Life Sciences/Biotechnology/Bio-engineering/Health Care, Agriculture/ Veterinary Sciences and all other allied areas by providing them an attractive avenue to pursue their R&D interests in Indian institutions.

Duration

The fellow can draw fellowship for a term of five years.

Money

The scheme provides a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs. 1,00,000/-p.m. In addition, a House Rent Allowance of Rs. 18,500/-p.m. (consolidated) is given to fellows. In case host institute provides accommodation to the fellow, no House Rent Allowance is admissible. The fellowship is taxable as per Govt. of India rules.

Qualifications

The applicant should possess a Ph.D./M.D. or equivalent degree with an outstanding track record as reflected in publications and other recognitions and with at least three years of post-doctoral research experience of which last two years should be from overseas laboratory. Those who have already returned to India within one year of the closing date of this advertisement are also eligible. Researchers upto 45 years of age as determined on closing date of application are eligible to apply.
