Profile

GNE myopathy is a progressive degenerative skeletal muscle disorder that causes extreme disability. It is an adult onset autosomal recessive disorder caused by biallelic mutations in GNE gene which is the rate limiting enzyme in the sialic acid biosynthetic pathway (see Nishino et al., 2015 for review). Currently there is no therapy available for this disease. WWGM has decided to fund strategic research in gap areas in order to hasten the process of finding a therapy/cure for GNE myopathy. The funding is planned as seed funding for one year in order to help establish proof of principle. The budget limit for each project is rupees eight lakhs. Currently the proposals are being sought in the following areas.

Structural, biochemical and functional characterization of mutant GNE proteins (containing mutations seen in patients). The aim is to understand how mutations spread all across the gene are changing the protein to result in the common disease phenotype of inclusion body and rimmed vacuoles.

Expression of GNE gene in muscle cells and tissues using viral and non-viral vectors. The aim is to have a system that can deliver and express wild type GNE gene in the muscles of mice. Preference will be given if the vector has been shown to be non-toxic in human or animal models.

This may be in terms of formulating new hypothesis, or scientific breakthroughs which aid in emergence of new technologies.

Eligibility:

Applicant should be an Indian citizen residing in India.

The applicant(s) must hold a regular academic/research position in a recognized institution.

The proposals can be submitted by an individual or by a team of investigators.Proposals submitted by a team of investigators must identify a Principal Investigator, who will spearhead the research objectives and administer the grant.

Nature of Proposals to be Supported:

The scheme is aimed at supporting proposals that are new, challenge existing hypothesis, and provide 'out of box' thinking on important problems. It should contain significant risk elements but promise of high reward if the difficulties could be circumvented. It is expected that the success of such proposals will have far reaching implications in S&T. Outcome could be new and significant theoretical or experimental advances, formulation of new hypothesis, or breakthrough science which will lead to new technologies. Proposals that address scientific issues which will result in 'incremental' knowledge will not be supported. Ideally, the proposal must contain bold research ideas which will have wide ranging impact and potential for new scientific and technological innovations.

      Profile

A Short Note About Dr Terry Hennessey: Terry Hennessey qualified in Medicine at Oxford University where he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine for his research on antibiotic-resistant on enterobacteria (undertaken with Dr Naomi Datta at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School). Keenly aware of the need to consider the serious threat posed by drug-resistant infections, Terry joined Imperial Chemical Industries Pharmaceuticals (now part of AstraZeneca) where he initiated a wide range of in vitro and in vivo tests needed for the discovery and development of novel antibacterial agents. With his medical background, scientific excellence and natural authority Terry had a wide international network. Ever a Francophile, Terry’s team included a highly professional group of chemists at ICI’s research laboratory in Reims. Notable among Terry’s achievements at ICI was the development of chlorhexidine as ‘Corsodyl’ in dental hygiene, and the novel broad-spectrum β-lactam meropenem (originally developed by Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co. Ltd.).

The Terry Hennessey Microbiology Fellowship offers a young investigator (normally under the age of 35) working in the field of infectious diseases, a travel grant of up to £1,500 to present a paper/poster at the annual ASM Microbe Meeting in the USA.

This Fellowship is open to applicants on a worldwide basis and the BSAC administers this award on behalf of the Terry Hennessey Microbiology Fellowship Trust. Applications are considered by the BSAC Grants Secretary.
