This refresher course is aimed at university/college faculties and will cover the current understanding of taxonomy, phytogeography and ecology. The course not only will thoroughly introduce traditional morphotaxonomy and phenetics, but also cladistics and phylogenetics-based modern molecular systematics of a wide range of plant lineages right from cyanobacteria and algae to angiosperms. Also covered are modern concepts of phytogeography as well as ecology, with some of the leading experts and academy fellows of the disciplines as resource persons.

The course not only includes terrestrial plants, but also marine and aquatic habitats-an overlooked area in taxonomy syllabi of Indian universities. Another highlight of this programme is a training on wide range of scientific infrastructures pertinent to the discipline available at CUPB. Included in this programme are practicals on several topics like herbarium and field methods, botanical keys, identification of plants using keys, apps and barcoding, phytography, chemotaxonomy, molecular taxonomy, DNA Sequencing, DNA Taxonomy etc. Central University of Punjab has excellent research infrastructure including DNA Sequencer, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope, Cytogenetic Microscope, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatographic Mass Spectrometer, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, Flow Cytometer and so on. Participants will be provided with hands-on training on the relevant scientific infrastructure pertinent to the topics of refresher programme. This course will be considered as a â€˜Refresher Course’ for Career Advancement Scheme of faculties as per the UGC guidelines (2018).
