Event Details

The 2019 preparatory school on Population Genetics and Evolution (PGE2019) will be an intensive one-week course, scheduled an year before the Main School on the same subject in 2020. Together, the program aims to develop an interest and understanding of population genetics and evolution among students from diverse backgrounds, including biology, computer science, mathematics, medicine and physics.

The preparatory school will cover (1) key mathematical concepts and tools that would benefit students from a biology background, and (2) important concepts and basic knowledge of biology and genetics that would benefit students from a non-biology background. The course will include lectures to disseminate key information; problem sets to get familiar with concepts and tools; and discussion of primary literature in a journal club format. The reading will include both empirical and theoretical work in evolutionary biology and population genetics, allowing students to see applications of course content. At the end of the course, students will be given a curated list of further reading on population genetics and evolution to prepare for the main school.

Lecturers and topics:

  1. Deepa Agashe (NCBS) : Introduction to genetics and experimental methods
  2. Vishwesha Guttal (IISc) : Introduction to ecology
  3. Kavita Jain (JNCASR) : Introduction to evolutionary theory
  4. Uma Ramakrishnan (NCBS) : Introduction to population genetics

The applications are invited from postdocs, and students pursuing PhD or in the final year of a Master’s degree who are interested in population genetics or evolution. A subset of interested and promising students from the preparatory school will be pre-selected for the main school in the subsequent year.

Application starts on: October 15, 2018

Application deadline: November 15, 2018
