Event Details

The intensive week-long course aims to inculcate an appreciation for a world teeming with biological wonders, by using ahands-on, curiosity-driven approach that defiesconventional disciplinary boundaries, and invokes ideas and tools from mathematics, physics, computer science andengineering to understand the biological systems.

The course is structured to allow students to embark on a deepexploration of quantitative case studies, which are specifically designed to illuminate thekey principles of biology. The course will demonstrate various ways in which one can use simple order of magnitude’ estimates toprovide insights into problems ranging from the fidelity of protein translation,to understanding how far a bird can fly without stopping, and how amphibians arrive on oceanic islands.

Further, the course will also demonstrate how one can use statistical mechanics-based approaches to explore problems inregulatory biology. Examples of such approaches include the physics of post-translationalmodifications, how cells make transcriptional decisions and the precision with whichembryonic development takes place.

In addition to these topics, the course alsoinvolves a series of hands-on projects using Python to amplify the case studiesdiscussed in class.

Participation:

Any graduate student or post-doctoral fellow interested in employing mathematical approaches for studying biological problems. Please send us a 150-word statement of purpose describing your research and why you are interested in attending this course, before the noon of 15th December 2018.

Local participants residing in Bengaluru are encouraged to apply. Outstation participants are welcome too, provided they can arrange their own accommodation.
