Performers and researchers from The Theatre Chipping Norton and Oxford University cheekily bring bits from Mary Shelley's dystopian novels to satirical 90s cabaret songs together in this brilliant piece. Viruses are a part of us—billions of diverse microbes and viruses live within our gut, inside our lungs, and skin. Though we have discovered 5600 species of viruses, many more exist; we cannot outnumber or outmatch them. This talk by Pranay Lal will delve into the expansive history of viruses in order to reconfigure our relationship with them.

It is of great fundamental interest to develop experimental model systems to reconstruct design principles underlying formation of living cells and shed light on how life emerged on Earth and possibly elsewhere. An ambitious strategy is the bottom-up approach, which aims to systematically control the assembly of basic building blocks with defined functionality to construct a life-like entity or artificial cells. Dr. Bhattacharya explored the roles of miscellaneous lipid assemblies as building blocks of artificial cellular compartments. Dr. Bhattacharya demonstrated minimal biochemical routes to lipid membrane synthesis and their growth and division. Dr. Bhattacharya has further developed model systems that mimic membrane-rich intracellular organelles such as the endoplasmic reticulum.

Ahanjit Bhattacharya is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Steven Boxer at Stanford University. At Stanford, he is also pursuing a teaching certificate. Ahanjit carried out his doctoral research in the lab of Neal Devaraj at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to this, he completed his Bachelors and Masters in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 2014. His research interests include bottom-up synthetic biology, origins of life, lipid materials, and bioconjugate chemistry. His major accomplishments are development of novel lipid compartments as programmable synthetic cells and organelles, and development of minimal biochemical strategies for synthesis of membrane-forming lipids. He is the recipient of several honors and awards such as membership of the global Reaxys PhD Prize Club (2020), Luna Fung Scholarship (2019), Teddy Traylor Award (2018), Prime Minister of India Gold Medal (2014), and Indian National Biology Olympiad Gold Medal (2009). Ahanjit is passionate about communicating science and making it a transformational force for betterment of society and humanity.

This masterclass by art historian Siobhan Conaty will delve into Health Humanities, an interdisciplinary field that brings the practice of the arts and humanities into the study of health, care, and well-being. By identifying where art history intersects with medicine, participants will be introduced to novel ways of understanding and approaching medical education and clinical practice.

Vidya Krishnan will share the almost forgotten story of a man, Ignaz Semmelweis, our would be tragic hero. He was a Hungarian doctor who saved millions of lives and spared countless mothers and newborns, excruciating deaths. For that, he was initially demoted, and eventually fired from his job, duped and beaten to death while trying to escape from an asylum. His idea – that little invisible microorganisms – were causing diseases were radical in the early 19th century. Like all radical ideas, they were rejected. This is a story about the time before modern medicine, science denialism, and the impact it has on communities.

This year, it is our pleasure to announce Synapse 2021 symposium featuring two days of regular talks by established and early-career researchers in the field, as well as Lightning talk sessions by PhD students and post-doctoral fellows. We bring to you an exciting line-up of speakers working in diverse areas of neuroscience from development of the hippocampus, to maintaining order in the adult brain, brain-behaviour interactions from rodents to ravens, molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, and the use of brain organoids to decode CNS pathologies. Further, this symposium will also serve as a platform for research students and post-doctoral fellows to showcase their work to the wider neuroscience community. We believe that this can be a great forum that would offer excellent visibility for your work.

We change our microbiomes every day through the foods we eat, the environments we experience, even the people we live and work with. Through the American Gut Project, the largest crowdfunded citizen-science project yet conducted, we now know about the microbiomes of many types of people, from the healthiest (student-athletes, centenarians) to the sickest (cancer patients, ICU patients, those with C. diff). This raises the prospect of a system for real-time analysis of our microbiomes that helps guide our daily decisions in a way that optimizes our microbiomes for life-long wellness.
