The Conference is being organized in association with the SOCIETY FOR PLANT RESEARCH (VEGETOS), New Delhi. The conference has been planned as an international platform in the Indian subcontinent region to foster global exchange of innovative ideas and technologies in harnessing the bio-synthetic capabilities of green plants.

Green plants form the resource base for all life forms on this planet and their unique biology make them the most abundant primary producers on earth. Today, the pressing needs to conserve fossil fuels and to utilize natural resources sustainably, has made us look back to the plant kingdom for more viable alternatives. With advanced techniques in molecular biology and biotechnology, scientists are also exploring novel means to address issues of environment and human health. Industries are eager to imbibe technologies which are more environment friendly and use resources more sustainably. Thus, to enable exchange of ideas and experiences, an international conference can enable a global platform that would encourage scientists to share results and also attract industries who could showcase their latest technologies.

The International conference on PLANT BIOFACTORIES: STRATEGIES & CHALLENGES (PBSC – 2019) has been planned as an international platform in the Indian subcontinent region to foster global exchange of innovative ideas and technologies in harnessing the bio-synthetic capabilities of green plants. Importantly, Evolutionary Biology in the 21st Century informs in critical ways issues of central societal relevance, such as those concerning human health or the current biodiversity crisis. These problems affect the whole of humanity, and therefore, there is a growing recognition that the effort to tackle them also needs to unite scientists and experts from all over the world.

Switzerland has become a major force in research in evolutionary biology over the last two decades and has attracted some of the most well-known names from all over the world. The Indian research community is evolutionary biology is much smaller, but also vibrant, and has been making steady contributions to the field. Therefore, a coming together of experts from these two countries, is not only expected to benefit the respective communities, but will also give a boost to the field in general.

With this purpose in mind, evolutionary biologists of the two countries formed an informal group to promote the organization of joint conferences between scientists from the two countries. In 2018, six Indian evolutionary biologists visited University of Zurich to take part in the first Indo-Swiss collaboration primer in evolution and ecology. The aim was to promote both exchange of scientific ideas, as well as promote collaborations among the two groups of scientists. Modelling of biochemical pathways deregulated in disease condition offers mechanistic insights into the pathology; helps to elucidate mechanisms behind dug action and predict dose required for treatment and thereby greatly facilitates fundamental research and drug discovery. Such modelling requires a background in both molecular biology and mathematics.

Registration fee: Student/Postdoc ₹2,500 / Faculty ₹5,000 / Industry ₹10,000

The four days workshop will train researchers from life science and mathematics to communicate and work together to learn to build and analyse computer models using user-friendly open-source software. The workshop will be jointly organised by EBI and Indian Institute of
Technology Madras (IITM; https://www.iitm.ac.in/), more specifically, BioModels team from EBI along with Initiative for Biological Systems Engineering (IBSE; https://ibse.iitm.ac.in/) and Robert Bosch Centre for Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence (RBC-DSAI; https://rbcdsai.iitm.ac.in/)
from IITM. This national-level workshop will be organised locally at IITM. Various modelling approaches and tools will be introduced to the participants. They will explore a few of the disease-specific computer models from a recent publication, freely available in BioModels
repository (//www.ebi.ac.uk/biomodels/).

For more details check here.

Over the years, NRSM has involved scientists and research scholars from different areas of life sciences to discuss and brainstorm new ideas concerning their scientific interests. It helps to bridge the gap and foster the dynamics between the faculty and the student communities, thereby promoting scientific growth. Government agencies and private companies have generously funded our event.

The NRSM is now stepping into its 15th year. This year, through the theme “Need of the hour: To seek new doors or knock the ones in sight”, NRSM aims to provide a unique platform where scientific community and clinicians belonging to Cancer and Infectious disease biology to have talks, debate, and discussion on whether we as scientist should ask new questions based on curiosity or delve deeper into the already existing problems in the society.

Read more here.
