We want to get ourselves into the experiment to look for a new view on everyday life, which does not only conform to what we have known before. Photography gives the chance, to react immediately on situations in urban life, to find intense moments, the surprising constellations of people, objects, signs and architectural spaces in the streets. The choice of the theme is based on individual interests and is open in all aspects.

His talk at Kerala University, Palayam is titled LIFE AS A SUPERORGANISM: Getting to know the human microbiome.

Find talk details below.

Date: Wednesday, November 4, 2015

Time: 4:00 pm

Venue: University Senate Chamber, Kerala University, Palayam

Summary: Reading genomes has already revealed a new dimension of our connection with the rest of life, in the genes we share with every other organism. Getting to know our own microbes shows yet another. Will we end up valuing them more, even admiring them? In a world of antibiotics, antisepsis, disinfection, and pasteurisation, will we try to look after them better? Or can a superorganism look after itself?

About the author: Jonathan Turney has been a science writer, reviewer and editor since the early 1980s. He is the author of I, Superorganism: Learning to love your inner ecosystem (2015) about the human microbiome, The Rough Guide to the Future (2010), which was shortlisted for the UK Science Book Prize, Lovelock and Gaia: Signs of Life, and Frankenstein’s Footsteps: Science, Genetics and Popular Culture (1998), which won the British Medical Association Award for Popular Medical Book of the Year. He has worked for the Times Higher Education Supplement and Penguin Books, and taught at University College London and Imperial College. He enjoys writing and editing on assignment, especially around life sciences, futures, science and society and policy issues and has written for a wide range of audiences, producing everything from books to museum exhibition guides to school resources.

Source: http://www.iiserpune.ac.in/events/Science+and+Beyo...

This event is an opportunity specifically for postdoctoral fellows, to present their work and interact with senior faculty members invited from research Institutions and universities across India. The symposium aims to showcase postdoctoral talent within India, and enhance community networking. We hope it would also demonstrate the strength and quality of postdocs in the country.

Those seeking to advance in academic career tracks are strongly encouraged to apply. Registration for the event is free, but all registered participants are expected to submit an abstract, on the basis of which they will either have to give a talk or present a poster. This is to facilitate quality scientific reviews and discussions from the invited faculty. Participants will have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation in Bangalore.

Protecting and conserving India's biodiversity is a challenging and complex task. There has never been a more critical need for well‐informed professionals in our combined efforts to conserve India's rich natural heritage. As a small, but significant step to meet this need the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) is offering a comprehensive field based course on conservation science and allied social sciences needed to build a conceptually strong framework for effective conservation. The course will focus on conservation issues at the regional level but with a global perspective. A set of 6‐8 lectures will complement several half a day discussions and intensive project mode exercises in the field that will expose students to holistic perspectives, rigorous concepts, innovative tools and the latest techniques in conservation science. The 7‐8 day field‐based training in the Eastern Ghats is designed to maximize the student's exposure to real‐life field

Eligibility: Applicants should have obtained a Bachelor degree in any discipline. Senior undergraduate and postgraduate students with a keen interest in nature and conservation can also apply. Number of participants will be limited to 15.

Location : Visakhapatnam and Eastern Ghats, Papikonda Hills and national park.

Application process: An application from the participant should contain

1. A one‐page justification by the candidate as to why this course is important to him or her.
2. Demonstrated aptitude or interest in the area of natural resource conservation‐ published articles, essays, other relevant activities and membership.
3. Recommendation by a Department Head or concerned Supervisor.
4. Good academic record including a minimum of a First class in any discipline with an active interest in conservation and willingness to learn and
5. Latest CV.

The course fee is Rs. 500 and includes boarding, lodging and course material. Travel expenses to and from Visakhapatnam will have to be borne by the participants. We are able to keep the course fee to a minimum through a core grant to ATREE’s Academy for Conservation Science and Sustainability Studies by the Tata Social Welfare Trust (TSWT).
